In a comprehensive and moving speech entitled “ The Crowned Republic” and highlighting the 10th anniversary of the failed 1999 republican referendum, former Prime Minister  John Howard said he believed  an attempt to change the constitution to remove the Crown was unlikely in the present reign. In 1999, when about two thirds of the Parliament supported the referendum, he had demonstrated how more in touch he was with the rank and file.

Delivering the Neville Bonner Oration on 5 November to a large assembly in Sydney’s Tattersalls Club, including Senator Cory Bernardi, he was introduced by Professor David Flint. The noted broadcaster, Alan Jones also addressed the meeting, and moved the vote of thanks. Unusually among the commentators and an almost unanimous mainstream media who campaigned for the republic, he had advised listeners, “If you don’t know, vote no.’’   Mr. Jones explained in some detail why he had decided to adopt this approach.

The youthfulness of the very capable Master of Ceremonies, Jai Martinkovits, seemed to fascinate the ABC.  There is a delusional belief among republicans, propogated for example by the Health Minister, the Hon Nicola Roxon, that no new monarchists are being born. 

A DVD of these speeches, together with some exclusive interviews, is now in preparation. An excellent record of the event, and a bargain at only $20 including post, packaging and the GST, this DVD would make a superb gift. In addition it would be a valuable resource which you could  donate to your favourite school, university or public library.
