Rugby Union 2011 World Cup Tonga v. New Zealand

The 2011 Rugby Union World Cup opened in Oakland on nine September with the first match between Tonga and New Zealand, both members of the Commonwealth.

 The visiting team opened with "Ko e fasi ʻo e tuʻi ʻo e ʻOtu Tonga”,  the "Song of The King of the Tonga Islands",  first used in 1874. The national anthem of New Zealand,  "God Defend New Zealand” “, "Aotearoa", followed. Tthe Tongans then performed a war dance  followed by the celebrated New Zealand All Blacks'  Haka. New Zealand beat Tonga, 41:10. Like Australia, both countries are constitutional monarchies.
