Australia Post is commemorating the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with the release of a stamp issue on the 12 April.

There are two stamps featuring an image of the couple taken after their engagement was announced, one a domestic rate (60c) and the other the international rate to the United Kingdom ($2.25).

“Australia Post is delighted to commemorate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton. We trust this special stamp issue provides collectors and the public with a memento to mark this historic and happy event. The Royal Wedding stamps follow the recent stamp issue commemorating the 85th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II,” said Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour.

Prince William and Catherine Middleton were unofficially engaged whilst holidaying in Kenya in October 2010. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales formally announced his elder son’s engagement to Miss Catherine Middleton on 16 November 2010. The couple’s wedding will take place in Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.

Some of the traditions associated with previous British royal weddings have been set aside to make for a more relaxed occasion, the first of which is that the bride will arrive by car instead of the more traditional coach. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has declared the day a public holiday in the United Kingdom.

Westminster Abbey has been the scene of many royal occasions including the wedding of Prince William’s grandmother, the Queen in 1947 and his great-grandmother, the late Queen Mother in 1923. The miniature sheet features a detail of Westminster Abbey’s interior.

The Royal Wedding stamps were designed by Jo Muré from the Australia Post design studio. Included among Jo's recent stamp designs are Australia’s Favourite Stamps (2009) and the Centenary of Girl Guides (2010).

The Royal Wedding stamp products include a minisheet, first day cover, stamp pack, self-adhesive booklet of 10 x 60c stamps and a set of maxicards.

The stamp and associated products are available from participating Australia Post retail outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at from 12 April 2011 while stocks last.
