Writing about a controversial appointment in Tasmania, the editor of The Australian in "Tasmania, you've done it again"  recalls another appointment.

"Tasmanian voters might well scratch their heads at their governments' inability to find uncontentious candidates for jobs that should be above politics and beyond controversy.

"Only nine years ago, then Labor premier Jim Bacon announced the appointment of former Labor staffer and controversial diplomat Richard Butler as the state's governor.

"Aside from his political links, and lack of connection with Tasmania, he was renowned as an avid republican. It ended in tears."

It did indeed.
