Monarchists have forced the national broadcaster to backflip on its decision not to screen Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee festivities live, reports Zilka Grogan and Chris Walker in the Wentworth Courier,  Sydney’s eastern suburbs newspaper “A royal fuss over the Queen's diamond jubilee” 30/5. The report  pictures published with the report are by John Appleyards. The report continued:

Lobby group Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM) has successfully petitioned the ABC to screen key celebrations this weekend.

A petition to the ABC’s managing director Mark Scott and chairman James Spigelman, posted online last weekend, argued the taxpayer-funded broadcaster had “the function and indeed the duty of ensuring such access”.

The ABC had planned to screen highlights of the Thames River pageant on the evening of June 4, and of the St Paul’s service and procession on June 6.

But yesterday, with the petition reaching more than 2000 signatures since Sunday, the broadcaster announced it would screen the river pageant and balcony appearance live on ABC1.

Additional coverage of the celebrations will also be broadcast live on the digital channel ABC News24.

An ABC spokeswoman today said the broadcaster’s plans for live jubilee coverage were not initially advertised because of rights issues with the BBC.

ACM’s national convenor David Flint, of Bondi, said the majority of the celebrations occurred overnight in Australia, ensuring minimal disruption to regular programming.

“We’re very pleased that the ABC saw the sense of doing this,” Professor Flint said. “We would have liked them to have filmed the thanksgiving service but they’ve gone a good part of the way so we’re very happy.”

Others, including Woollahra councillor and ACM’s deputy head Peter Cavanagh, have scored a front row seat to Queen Elizabeth II’s balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace this weekend.

Cr Cavanagh was in London for the Queen’s gold jubilee a decade ago. “I always wanted to see a spectacular balcony scene and to be there was really emotional,” he said.
