According to Laura Roberts in the London Daily Telegraph, The Queen  will travel in a special Royal Barge leading a flotilla of at least 1,000 boats down the River Thames, according to plans announced yesterday.

Between 30,000 to 40,000 people will be on the river during the event which will take place on 3 June  2012 to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

...more than 1 million...

More than one million people are expected to line the banks of the Thames for a “once in a lifetime party”.

The Diamond Jubilee River Pageant will be one of the highlights of a special four-day bank holiday weekend created to mark the Jubilee.

Lord Salisbury, Chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, said: “The Queen, I’m told, supports our goals with enthusiasm.”

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will travel in a vessel adapted from an existing Thames Sailing Barge.

At the rear of the 90ft barge a structure designed to resemble a “coach on water” will be added with an additional clear perspex canopy to enable the crowds a glimpse of the Queen.

The design is inspired by the ceremonial state barges of the seventeenth and eighteenth century - in particular the boat that transported Charles II from the Netherlands to London on his return from exile.

A trumpet fanfare will accompany the royal party on the boat.

A floating belfry with eight new bells commissioned by the 17th century City Church of St James Garlickhythe, will follow directly behind the Royal Barge with the peals echoed by riverbank churches along the route.

The Queen will disembark at Tower Bridge to watch the flotilla salute her as it goes past.

The procession begins at Putney Bridge and continues to Canary Wharf. The flotilla will travel at an average speed of 6 knots, and is expected to be seven and a half miles long. The pageant will begin at 2.30pm on the ebbing tide and is expected to end at 5pm.

Around half the boats will be rowed or pedalled with the rest made up of motorised vessels including steamers, tugs, Dunkirk Little Ships and old Thames fire-fighting boats. Commonwealth countries and different regions of the UK will be represented and members of the armed forces, fire, police and rescue services also take part.

“Herald barges” will divide up the flotilla providing music, entertainment, fireworks and pyrotechnics.

Vessels with sails too high to pass under London Bridge will line the river from London Bridge to Wapping creating an “avenue of sail”.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: “It’s going to be a joyful, successful version of Dunkirk.”

Mr Johnson claimed the budget for the event was around £8million but Lord Salisbury said: “Don’t hold us to a figure. It’s going to be quite a lot of millions.”

The direct cost of the event is intended to be met entirely through appeals for private donations and sponsorship, although the Government will meet the security costs incurred for dealing with crowds.

The Queen will reach the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne on February 6 next year.

The Government designated Tuesday June 5, 2012 as a bank holiday for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and, to enable a four-day weekend of celebrations, the late May bank holiday has been moved to Monday June 4.

From June this year members of the public may apply online to take part in the flotilla with their own boats. They will then be vetted before possibly being allocated a place. There will also be places available on some 240 passenger boats.

Adrian Evans, Pageant Master, said: “There will be rowing boats and working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes will be beautifully dressed in strings and Union Jacks - their crews and passengers turned out in their finest rigs.”

The Foundation also launched a fundraising project to raise £100million for charities focusing on the Commonwealth, youth and education.
