Statement by the National Convenor
National Office, Sydney Australia

Major General Michael Jeffery, who was appointed Governor-General one year ago tomorrow, has proved to be exactly the right person to be Australia’s Head of State. Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM), representing 20,000 supporters Australia wide, congratulate His Excellency Major General Jeffery for his outstanding work as Governor-General over the past 12 months.

The Governor-General’s constitutional function is central to the proper workings of our Australian system of government. As with the judges, the Governor-General is always above politics. As the constitutional umpire he exercises the reserve powers, including approving the holding of elections and appointing or removing governments. Before approving legislation and regulations he satisfies himself that all proper constitutional and legal requirements have been fulfilled. In these roles, the Governor-General is a significant check and balance against the abuse of power in our system of government.

The Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery also perform important ceremonial duties, working on a daily basis with Australians across the Commonwealth on all those things which unite us, rather than those political questions which so often divide us. The Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery are patrons of many of our charitable, educational, sporting, professional and cultural organisations. Over the past twelve months they have travelled the length and breadth of the Commonwealth, visiting all of the states and the mainland territories to attend large numbers of functions and events at the request of those organising them.

As is appropriate for our Head of State, the Governor-General receives the ambassadors and the high commissioners. He represents Australia overseas as Head of State, such as at the United Nations.

In May this year, Major General and Mrs Jeffery were called upon to officially represent Australia at the marriage of Mary Donaldson to Prince Frederick of Denmark, culminating in a magnificent celebration of Australian and Danish cultures.

“This role of uniting Australians demonstrates to all that the highest office in our Commonwealth, our Australian Head of State, is above and beyond politics. The constitutional and ceremonial duties have been fulfilled by Major General Jeffery with dignity, integrity and enthusiasm” said Professor David Flint, National Convenor of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy. “Australians all will commend Major General Jeffery for the outstanding work he has done as Australia’s Head of State since taking up his appointment twelve months ago.”
