Our Identity, Charter, Cause and History Print E-mail

There are two main areas of note that help explain more about Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.  These cover Our Identity and Charter and Our History.

Our Identity - Charter

  • We are Australians united to defend our constitutional system of government.
  • We hold different political views.
  • We come from different ethnic origins.
  • We speak for different generations.
  • We have had different experiences of life.
  • We defend the place of the Crown in our constitution for it has served our nation well.v
  • We oppose the attempt of a minority group to promote a republican form of government.
  • We believe the republicans push is a divisive and a distracting issue and should not be forced upon Australia at this time when there are many real challenges to face.
  • We reject the notion that those who defend our constitution and the position of the Queen of Australia in our constitution are less Australian or less patriotic or less contemporary than those who promote change.
  • We assert that our present system, as it has evolved over time, has provided Australia with an enviable record of democratic government.
  • We are committed to preserving our present system of government and living under a constitutional government with democratically elected Parliaments, independent courts and dedicated Executive Governments.
  • We believe the standard of duty and service of all these branches of our government is symbolised by the Crown.
  • We believe that our form of government combines all of the advantages of constitutional monarchy with the full measure of independence and egalitarianism which republicans espouse.
  • Under our system of government Australia long ago achieved complete independence symbolised by the Queen's title being changed, by her own consent and by Act of the Australian Parliament, to Queen of Australia.
  • We believe that as a system of government, ours works well and should not be tinkered with in the name of theory or to satisfy the envy or ambition of a select few.
  • We believe we should not disrupt our nation with a divisive debate founded on ignorance of its history and institutions which are based on outdated and discredited national fervour or drawing on imported prejudices.
  • As befits a free people, living in a Parliamentary democracy, there are amongst us differences of view and emphasis:
  • Some of us support the system of constitutional monarchy in a parliamentary democracy, as such. For those of us it is the least imperfect form of government yet devised and it should endure in Australia indefinitely;
  • Some of us, whilst willing to contemplate the possibility of a different form of government at some future time, oppose the attempt to raise such a debate at this time. Those of us consider that there are many other issues facing Australia which have far greater urgency: reconciliation with Aboriginal Australians; reduction of unemployment, especially amongst the young; improved relations with our Asian neighbours; restructuring of the economy; the challenge of public health and education to name but a few;
  • Some of us believe that Australia is already a form of republic under the Crown: a "crowned republic". Australia now enjoys all the desirable features of a republican government and a constitutional monarchy without any disadvantages of either system. Agitation for change is unnecessary, irrelevant, divisive and distracting; and
  • Some of us simply admire Her Majesty the Queen of Australia. We are hurt and angry at the attacks on her in recent times despite her exemplary lifetime of service to her people - including the people of Australia.
  • Whatever our differences of approach or emphasis, all of us agree that for the forseeable future we should defend the Australian Constitution and the place of the Crown in it. We should celebrate together, as one united nation, the achievement of a century of our democratic Commonwealth. We should defend the Commonwealth and resist its replacement by a republic.
  • The Australian Constitutional Monarchy provides an excellent balance between politicians representing the wishes of the majority and the Monarch protecting the interests of all Australians.

History of ACM

Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM) was launched in June 1992 to preserve protect and defend  the Australian Constitution, the role of the Crown in it, and our National Flag

The original Foundation Council included Charter signatories of eminent Australians from across the nation. Our founders included Michael Kirby (subsequently  a Justice of the High Court), the Rt Hon Sir Harry Gibbs, Justice Lloyd Waddy, Neville Bonner AO, Dame Leonie Kramer, The Hon Barry O'Keefe, Alderman Doug Sutherland AM, Lord Mayor of Sydney,  Sir John Atwill, Dr Margaret Olley, The Hon Helen Sham-Ho MLC and others. The first national executive director was Mr Tony Abbott 1992-1994. When Mr Abbott entered the Federal Parliament in 1994 he was succeeded by Mrs Kerry Jones. Since inception, Councils and Branches have been formed across the nation. ACM is fast becoming the largest grassroots community organization in Australia. It was ACM which organized the highly successful 'No Republic - ACM' campaign for delegates to attend the Constitutional Convention.

Since 1992, without government assistance, ACM has been in the forefront in defending our constitutional system.

  • From the standing room only rally in Sydney Town Hall on 26 November 1993, addressed by the future Prime Minister John Howard, to one of the largest and most peaceful demonstrations in recent years in Australia against Bob Carr’s 1996 decision to downgrade the office of Governor and expel the Governors from Government House, ACM has emerged as the leader of the Australian constitutional monarchist movement.

  • ACM soon became the leading intellectual source in the defence of constitutional monarchy, publishing more than all of the other participants in the debate. Indeed Bob Hawke was to concede that the “constitutional monarchists are winning the intellectual argument.”

  •  In 1998, with 72.82% of the constitutional monarchist vote in the Constitutional Convention elections, ACM was able to forge there a powerful coalition with four smaller constitutional monarchist groups there, earning the praise of Cardinal Pell for our unity and our dedication to principle.

  • "The main monarchist organisation is ACM. ..By 1999 ACM, like its opposite number ARM in the case of republicans, appears to have become the spokesperson for monarchists." ( Parliamentary Library Research Paper 25 1998-1999)

  • Because of the size of our vote, ACM delegates were appointed to all eight constitutional monarchists seats on the ten person official Vote No Committee to handle the Vote No advertising campaign in the 1999 referendum.

  •  In a parallel but distinct campaign with supporter funded advertising, ACM appointed directors and opened offices in every state, with coordinators in every electorate.

  • Marshalling over 50,000 supporters across the Commonwealth, ACM ran a tight and ultimately successful campaign which resulted in a landslide rejection of the politicians' republic in every state and 73% of electorates.

  •  When, after the referendum, the republicans announced their plans for a series of plebiscites, ACM adopted and has consistently  denounced this as an irresponsible attempt to gain a vote of no confidence in the world’s most successful constitution.

  •  Planning to break the mainstream dominance of the media by republicans in 1999, ACM has embraced the latest technology.  By marrying that with both deep and penetrating studies of the issues, ACM has developed its main site www.norepublic.com.au into what has been described as “probably the most active constitutional monarchist site in the world.”

  •  ACM's principal  site is now attracting a record number of hits, more than twice as many as in 2008 and four times than in 2007. Based on returns for the first eight months of 2009, the projected annual rate is over 6 million hits and close to 3 million page views. Interest in what we are doing is not restricted to Australia; about 30% of visitors to the site come from overseas. In any major campaign, this site will become a significant source of information.

  •  Soon after the release of a report which included only 1 in 3 of Year 10 students could correctly choose a  definition of the constitution in  a simple multi choice test, ACM  launched the latest version of our new major educational project, The Crowned Republic, with a new website www.crownedrepublic.com.au and an ambitious outreach programme.

Today, the organisation continues to advocate the retention of constitutional monarchy as the preferred model of governance for our Commonwealth. Our activities are wide and diverse. They include producing educational materials, providing speakers for public forums and organising gatherings where fellow Australians can have an opportunity to learn more about the unique system of government that has helped to safeguard our cherished democratic traditions and freedom.

We are always ready to welcome those of you who support our system of governance into the ACM family. If you would like more information about how to do so, please drop us a line by clicking the email link below or alternatively, you may call us toll free on 1800 622 229 during business hours.
