Republicans' Best Asset?
Is David Flint ( National Convenor since 1998) the republicans best asset, as some claim?

Australia Post delivers Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM

Australia Post has done it again. “The 2009 Queen's birthday stamp issue features the Trooping of the Colour parade, which marks the Queen's official birthday each year,” Australia Post has just announced.

“The ceremony has marked the sovereign's official birthday since 1748 and the stamps in this year's issue show how the Queen has participated in the parade during her reign; from riding at the head of the parade in regimental uniform to riding in a carriage.”

            Image

And as Harold Schmauz of the Monarchist Alliance observes “Australians are not allowed to watch the parade on television, unlike the German TV audience who have had the privilege of watching the Trooping of the Colour since 1977.”

He has pointed out in the past that the programme is shown more than once each year on German television.

The programme rates well. The cost must be minimal. If the national broadcaster won’t do it, perhaps one of the commercial or pay TV broadcasters will.

To return to this year’s stamp series, the  miniature sheet features the annual Trooping of the Queen's Colour in Australia held at the Royal Military College of Australia, Duntroon in Canberra.

Australia Post is to be congratulated on the superb work it does, and not only on this occasion.

Using these stamps...

ACM believes that using these stamps will help to remind people that Elizabeth II has reigned for over half the life of the Commonwealth of Australia. She is not paid, she will not receive a golden handshake or massive superannuation, but she and her family have been concerned about and intimately involved in the life of the nation.

They did not campaign in 1999, Her Majesty saying the decision about our constitutional arrangements was one for us to make, and that as long as we wished, she would continue to do her duty and serve as Queen of Australia.

Using these stamps will remind all of the place of the Sovereign and the role of the Crown in our Commonwealth of Australia.
