Diamond Jubilee 2012

The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II is the forthcoming international celebration in 2012 marking the 60th anniversary of the accession of The Queen.

The British and Canadian governments have announced details of celebrations in those countries. ACM is asking that similar celebrations take place in Australia.

A petition to our governments and parliaments to honour The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 may be signed here

Constitution Day in the Diamond Jubilee Year Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Monday, 09 July 2012
Constitution Day falls on 9 July each year . This is the day when Queen Victoria assented to the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, 1900, which brought to a successful conclusion the unusually peaceful and democratic process to unite the six self governing Australian colonies.

We Australians federated under the Crown; the Crown has been with us from the settlement in 1788, and has been intimately involved on every significant occasion in the life of the nation.

(ACM celebrated the day in 2010 by the launch of a superb collection of videos on the Australian Constitution made by Wing Commander Nick Hobson DFC AFC, "The Beginner's Guide to the Australian Constitution". This took place in Parliament House Sydney where a selection of the videos were shown to an appreciative audience.)

...the Proclamation....

The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act provided that it should take effect on a date to be proclaimed by The Queen. This is was done on 17 September, 1900 at Balmoral, Her Majesty declaring that she was then satisfied that the people of Western Australia had indicated in a referendum that they too wished to join the Commonwealth of Australia.

The Queen then signified that the new Australian nation should come into being on the first day of the new year and the first day of the new century.

...swearing in...

In the first video below, you may see the swearing in of the first Governor-General, Lord Hopetown, who then proceeds to swear in the first ministry under Prime Minister Edmund Barton. (This and other videos mentioned in this column are not the newly produced ones launched on Thursday.)

This significant event took place on 1 January 1901 in a pavillion in Centennial Park Sydney. The Governor-General,and The Queen's Ministers of State for the Commonwealth, as the Constitution describes them, used the same desk on which The Queen had assented to the Act.

The second video shows scenes of the Federation parade in Sydney.

13th National Conference Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Tuesday, 03 July 2012
ACM is the only organisation, monarchist or republican, to have consistently held a national conference in each of the thirteen years since the referendum.  In addition we held at least three before the referendum.

Just as an aside, when we announced the conference  in some of the early years, the republican movement would then rush to announce theirs. The amusing difference was that in some years, we held ours and the republicans did not.

We have also made the point not to concentrate these in Sydney but to hold them around the country. Australia is a federal Commonwealth, and it is important that national organisations reflect this.

...Diamond Jubilee Conference...

.

We are delighted to announce that our Thirteenth National Conference, the Diamond Jubiolee Conference, will be held in one of Australia’s largest inland cities, located in the Riverina half way between Sydney and Melbourne, the City of Wagga Wagga.  The City is surrounded by outstanding tourist attractions, as this video shows.

This is on the invitation of an outstanding member from our Wagga Wagga Branch,  Rhonda Schipp.

As usual we are trying  to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum by avoiding five star inner city hotels and similar establishments.

Our key note speaker will be that outstanding constitutional monarchist, Cory Bernardi, a Senator for South Australia.  An outstanding athlete, accomplished author and businessman, Senator Bernardi is a persuasive communicator.

We shall be releasing full details of the conference soon.

Before Queen, Australian Black Caviar takes Royal Ascot Diamond Jubilee Stakes Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Sunday, 24 June 2012

Black Caviar scrambled home to stretch her record to 22 wins from 22 races at Royal Ascot on Saturday, 23 June 2012. This report is from the national news service, SKY News.

The Australian superstar, ridden by Luke Nolan and trained by Peter Moody, edged the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes from French runner Moonlight Cloud.

Black Caviar cruised down the Ascot straight and appeared to have the race in the bag when hitting the front and taking a two-length lead into the last 200 metres.

With Moonlight Cloud and Restiadargent closing fast, Nolan suddenly had to get to work to ensure the 1-6 favourite retained her unbeaten tag which she did but only by a head.

An anticipated 10,000 Australians in the grandstand then held their collective breath as Nolen initially failed to respond to Moonlight Cloud's challenge.
