ABC buckles to monarchist pressure Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Tuesday, 29 May 2012

ABC has buckled  to monarchist pressure and will now  screen Live coverage of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant on Sunday night in the Eastern States on ABC1 with Live coverage across Australia on ABC News 24, according to a report by  David Knox in TV Tonight , 28 May 2012.  The Herald Sun's Colin Vickery described it as a backflip.

The ABC had been forced into an "about-face" after it was slammed for shunning the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, reported Colin Vickery in the Herald Sun (“ABC backflip on Queen celebrations”, 29/5).

This followed his report on the day before (“No joy over ABC's Diamond Jubilee coverage” 28/5)
This stated that the  ABC had been slammed for shunning the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations this weekend.

The snub, it said , had  come in spite of the fact that last year’s wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton was one of the biggest TV events of the past decade.

Reporting that ABC TV viewers will miss the spectacular Diamond Jubilee Pageant – with 1000 boats travelling down the Thames River, including  a contingent of Australian Surf Lifesavers.

Instead the ABC planned  a repeat of raunchy Warren Beatty movie Shampoo instead.

...appalled, astounded....

The newspaper reported Australians for Constitutional Monarchy head, Professor David Flint, had  “savaged” the ABC for the snub. “I think it is absolutely appalling and astounding,” Professor Flint told the Herald Sun.

“I assumed the ABC was going to at least broadcast the central events, as you would expect them to do a royal wedding or a coronation.”

...how it began...

This affair began when we learned last Friday that the crucial events of the Diamond Jubilee Central Weekend were not to be broadcast live on ABCTV. We were informed that news reports would be shown on ABC News 24, which many people cannot see. We were told it would not be a continuous live transmission.

We immediately prepared a detailed letter recalling the ABC’s obligations to the nation, and requesting this decision be reversed. This was sent by mail, fax and email to the Chairman, the Managing Director and the ABC Board.

We have heard nothing from the ABC. Accordingly we used the considerable internet resources of ACM  to mount a challenge, relying on traditional media outlets beginning wiht the press. A report by Tim Barlass first appeared in the Sun Herald  and then in interstate newspapers. The story was taken up by talk back radio. The pressure on the ABC increased. We were preparing to intensify the campaignif the ABC did not relent.

David Knox says most media articles had “neglected to acknowledge ABC was always going to have coverage via ABC News 24.” It was not, or at least, this is not what we were told before we were diverted, protesting,  to a message bank. In fact we were told not to expect a Live transmission, but reports during the news. That was made very clear to us. There is a world of difference between these and in in any event many, if not most, Australians cannot receive ABC News 24.

The ABC has now decided that ABC1′s previously scheduled 1975 movie Shampoo is to be replaced by Live coverage of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant. The following is apparently from the ABC announcement. Surprisingly, it was not sent to us.

in the ABC’s own words…

CALLING ALL MONARCHISTS - URGENT ACTION NEEDED - NOW Print E-mail

We urgently need your help now.  It is imperative you act before close of business on Thursday 31 May.

Australians are being denied the opportunity to see the great events of the central weekend of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London on 2-5 June.  Jai Martinkovits and David Flint explain the situation in the following video.

So join us to show the ABC that they should perform the role and function for which they are funded by the taxpayers of Australia.

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION NOW TO THE ABC MANAGING DIRECTOR MARK SCOTT AO & THE ABC BOARD.

The honour and duty of ensuring that all  Australians can see these events as they occur and in full obviously falls on our national broadcaster, the ABC.

At the centre of course is the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the reign of the Queen of Australia, Queen Elizabeth II..

The situation is extraordinary. The ABC now has not one but four taxpayer funded television channels.

And instead of broadcasting these events, the ABC will have either closed down a channel or will be showing a rather tired and motley collection of repeat programs, old films, and music videos.

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION NOW TO THE ABC CHAIRMAN, THE HON JAMES SPIGELMAN AC,QC, 7THE ABC BOARD.

Australians who subscribe to pay television, or who have access to Internet television, will be able to to see these events. We understand Channel 9 is planning to show the Buckingham Palace Concert, and the Foxtel APAC channel is commendably planning a full transmission.

But a large number of Australians – the overwhelming majority - do not have the means to access these resources.

If the ABC does not broadcast these events, preferably on the widely accessible ABC1, our national broadcaster will have deprived millions of Australians have the opportunity to see what a great national, Commonwealth and world event.

If the ABC does not relent, most Australians will not be able to see:

  • the Epsom Derby,
  • the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant,
  • the BBC concert at Buckingham Palace,
  • the lighting by the Queen of the Diamond Jubilee National Beacon,
  • the Service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral,
  • the Carriage Procession to Buckingham Palace, and,
  • Her Majesty’s balcony appearance and the Flypast

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION NOW TO THE ABC CHAIRMAN, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND DIRECTORS.

Australians rightly look to the ABC to provide access to events which are of national significance. The Crown is central to our constitutional system, and support for change to a politician to public has collapsed -so much so that republican politicians have put off even considering any change during the present reign, when it is most unlikely they will be in Parliament most will no longer have the empowerment not be in Parliament.

Please urgently sign the petition.

And if they authorise you to do so, include the names of your family and friends.

Do urgently forward this on to anyone you think will be interested..

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION NOW TO THE ABC CHAIRMAN, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND DIRECTORS.

And while you are signing this, you can also put your name to a Loyal Address to Her Majesty the Queen herself.

You can be part of history, with your name on a document which will be transmitted and sent in permanent form to Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

BE PART OF HISTORY NOW – SIGN THE LOYAL ADDRESS TO THE QUEEN

Please sign both documents now. We do not have much time. We shall have to rule off the ABC petition at close of businesss on Thursday 31 May.

Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Sunday, 27 May 2012

At high water in the afternoon of Sunday 3 June 2012, up to a thousand boats muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty The Queen to lead the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. It will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. Rowed boats and working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes will be beautifully dressed with streamers and Union Jacks, their crews and passengers turned out in their finest rigs. The armed forces, fire, police, rescue and other services are all afloat and there are an exuberance of historic boats, wooden launches, steam vessels and other boats of note.

All Australians should be able to see this on ABC1. That is the role and function of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Indeed it is their duty.

Support for monarchy soars,Australia, UK - National TV debate Print E-mail

Increasing support for the monarchy and the question of the succession were the subject of the Channel 7 Weekend Sunrise programme after the 8.00am news on Saturday 26 May, 2012.

Professor David Flint from Australians for Constitutional Monarchy and the recently appointed Australian Republican Movement's National Director, Mr. David Morris, debated these issues on national television.
They were encouraged by Channel 7's able presenters, Andrew O'Keefe and Samantha Armytage who will be reporting on the Diamond Jubilee functions from London.
