Royal Wedding Story

Prince William of Wales KG FRS, William Arthur Philip Louis was born on 21 June 1982. He is the elder son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales, and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

He is second in the line of succession, behind his father, to the thrones of Australia, Canada New Zealand, the United Kingdom and 12 other  independent states.

After graduating with a Master of Arts degree from the University of St Andrews, and spending parts of a gap year in Chile, Belize, and countries in Africa, he volunteered for service in the armed forces.

He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry,  serving with his brother Prince Harry.
He then earned his wings by completing pilot training at Royal Air Force College Cranwell, transferring to the Royal Air Force in 2009.

Prince William was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and underwent helicopter flying training and completed  generic and special-to-type helicopter training.
He is now at RAF Valley on No. 22 Squadron performing co-pilot duties on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter.

Official Photos Of William And Kate Released Print E-mail
Prince William & Catherine
Written by Paul Harrison, Royal Correspondent Sky Television UK
Sunday, 12 December 2010

Two official photographs of Prince William together with Kate Middleton have been released to mark the couple's engagement.

The two portraits - one formal, the other informal - were taken by celebrity photographer Mario Testino just days after their engagement was announced. Testino, a favourite with Royals including the late Diana, Princess of Wales, has described how happy he found the couple to be.

"I am very happy to have been asked to cover this historic moment that the whole world was waiting for," he said. "They are in their prime and brimming with happiness - I have never felt so much joy as when I see them together."

William asked Mario Testino to take these photographs because he loved the way he was able to bring out the exuberance and warmth of Diana in the photos he took just weeks before she died.

...two sides of future King and Queen...

The photographs - both taken at St James' Palace - show the two sides of the soon-to-wed future King and Queen. The formal shot, taken against a backdrop of paintings of former monarchs in the Palace's Council Chamber, sees the couple in a half-embrace.

The Prince's fiancee rests her hand on her husband-to-be's arm, showing off her engagement ring, which once belonged to William's mother, Diana. The sapphire is given maximum exposure in the relaxed pose too, taken in the Palace's Cornwall room.

Clearly at ease, heads touching, a casually dressed Prince William envelopes his future bride in his arms - while her hand rests on his chest. It is a photo which will become one of the iconic images of the 21 century, chosen from several sent to Clarence house by the famous photographer.

...ability...

Royal writer and photographer Ian Lloyd believes the couple chose Mario Testino because of his ability to make his subjects come alive, as he did with Diana.

"William asked Mario Testino to take these photographs because he loved the way he was able to bring out the exuberance and warmth of Diana in the photos he took just weeks before she died," Mr Lloyd explained.

"And you can see he's managed to bring that out in the Prince and his financee too."

In both photos Kate is wearing items bought from high street stores: A white dress from Reiss and a cream blouse from Whistles. Just as her blue dress sold old within days of wearing it on the day their engagement was announced, observers expect little different from her latest choices. But the item people really want to know about is the dress she'll be wearing on April 29th.

Republicans repeat mistake: The Australian Print E-mail

The instinct to mock anything that could be considered popular is an unfortunate trait of the self-styled sophisticates who dominate much of the media debate here.

It is evident in much of the commentary on the forthcoming royal wedding, where republicans are in danger of repeating the mistake they made at the 1999 referendum when they assumed that making a negative case would be enough to carry the vote.

Not only self funding, but producing a profit Print E-mail

Not only does the Royal family pay for itself – and provide a very handsome profit of around A350 million just this year to Her Majesty’ s UK government (“Royal Finances: Reform At Last “16/11), but it has now been officially confirmed that the UK profits enormously from the tourism attracted by the monarchy.

The economic benefit of a royal wedding, argues VisitBritain's chief executive, Sandie Dawe, is not to be sniffed at, according to a report from  Paola Totaro  in The Sydney Morning Herald  (20/11)

The economic benefit of a royal wedding, argues VisitBritain's chief executive, Sandie Dawe, will be substantial.

'Their marriage in the spring or summer of 2011 could easily be the biggest broadcast event in history, with predictions that 4 billion people, three-quarters of the potential global TV audience, could watch the event.

''Our research shows that in a typical year Britain's monarchy generates, on the most conservative estimates, well over £500 million [$810 million] a year directly and indirectly from overseas tourists - but the benefit of a royal wedding year is likely to outstrip that.''

The visit to Australia  by Prince William produced world wide media attention far beyond the budget of our tourist authority.
