The Queen's Birthday on Maundy Thursday Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Monday, 02 May 2011

In London Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has celebrated her 85th birthday on 21 April, 2011 with a visit to London's Westminster Abbey for the traditional Maundy Thursday service when she hands out specially minted coins.

The Queen and Prince Phillip were married in the Abbey and next week it will be the setting for the wedding of their grandson Prince William.

The service represents the Last Supper in the Christian faith and reflects a royal tradition dating back to the 12th century. This report is from Euronews.

Republican royal watcher verbals Senator Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Saturday, 30 April 2011

The republican movement’s royal watcher Barry Everingham  verballed Senator  Nick Minchin on 30 April on a site controlled by the media director of the republican movement.
He wrote:

That avowed monarchist, Nick Minchin, said on the appalling Q&A this week (28.4.2011) that the Duke of Edinburgh remarked on hearing we had voted to maintain the status quo: “what kind of people are those Australians?”

He added: “I too have heard that story from one of the royals present at the time.”

Senator Minchin did not say that. It was the compere who repeated the story which is unsourced, uncorroborated and clearly of doubtful veracity.

As we pointed out here, if the ABC had to use this story, the audience deserved to know that the story is at least questionable. in fact the ABC had a duty to soinform its viewers.

Tony Jones and not Senator Minchin said this:

“TONY JONES: ...we also heard in that documentary that Prince Philip, upon hearing that Australians had rejected the referendum said, 'What's wrong with those bloody people. Don't they know what's good for them?'”

Mr.  Everingham should apologize to the Senator. We must assume that he was equally mistaken about the “royal” telling this.

Unless of course he tells us who it was.

Life & Times of Queen Elizabeth II Print E-mail

Thursday, 21 April 2011

This video is a personal tribute to Queen Elizabeth II (born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, 21 April 1926) from the 'da facto' YouTube TV channel.

The producer says: "I'm from Singapore, a former British Crown Colony until 1959, it's a pity I couldn't have the Queen as my monarch, because I'm only 21. How i wish I was born much earlier!

"To all folks out there: Cherish your noble Queen, she's the quintessential monarch of the 21st century!

"Long live the Queen!! Long may she reign!!"

Siege of Tobruk: The 70th Anniversary Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Monday, 11 April 2011
The siege of Tobruk during the Second World War began on 11 April 1941, when the town was attacked by an Italian-German force under the charismatic Lieutenant General Rommel.

The seige was to continue for 240 days until it was relieved by the Allied Eighth Army.

The 70th anniversary is being commemorated  in Australia, and the survivors - the "Rats of Tobruk" honoured by a grateful nation.

The term was used pejoratively by the German propoganda agency, but it was adopted as a badge of honour by the soldiers.

...Australian 9th Division...

For much of the siege, Tobruk was defended by the Australian 9th Division under Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead.

General Wavell, the Commander-in-Chief of British Middle Eastern Command had instructed General Morshead to hold the fortress for eight weeks.

In fact the 9th Australian Division held it for over five months before most were withdrawn during September at the request of the Fadden and Curtin Australian Governments who wished to see Australians fighting under a unified command.

The 9th Division was replaced by the British 70th Infantry Division, with the  Polish Carpathian Brigade and Czechoslovak 11th Infantry Battalion (East). The held d Tobruk until the arrival of the Eighth Army.

...Royal Australian Navy with Royal Navy, Cairo and beyond......

The  Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy warships maintained supply lines to the defenders.

Keeping Tobruk, a major port on the North African coast, was crucial. Had it fallen, German  Rommel, would have been free to move on Cairo, Alexandria and beyond.

It was the first time that the Blitzkrieg of the German Panzers had been brought to a halt.

Following Operation Crusader the siege of Tobruk was lifted in December, 1941. Axis forces captured the fortress in 1942 after defeating allied forces in the Battle of Gazala.

Peaceful transfer of power in NSW Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Monday, 28 March 2011

Barry O'Farrell was sworn in by Her Excellency the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Bashir.

This was the 63rd occasion since 1856 when government has been transferred peacefully in the State. ( One followed a dismissal on constitutional grounds.)

There would be few countries in the world which have such a similar record.

This film was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on 28 March 2011.

Republican Movement Splintering Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Friday, 25 March 2011

It is now clear that the republican movement is not only divided over what form of politicians’ republic they are proposing the Australian people adopt.

They are also fundamentally divided over tactics and strategy.  There is clearly a serious split between the second most senior officer, Professor John Warhurst and the movement’s vice chair and media director, Mr. David Donovan.

(We hesitate to choose the only other apparent alternative: gross  incompetence and an organization in disarray.)

Image

...a campaign to coincide with the Royal Wedding...

This emerged when I recently observed on the ACM site (“Republican movement peeved by Royal Visit” 20/3)“The republican movement had proposed a campaign for a plebiscite at the time of the Royal Wedding; it would seem this strategy may have been reconsidered.”

I then received this email from the movement’s vice chair and media director:

“We never proposed anything of the sort – as we have asked you before, would you please stop telling lies about the ARM. Perhaps you can’t stop?”

...ARM announcement about the campaign to coincide with the wedding....

Far from telling lies, I was relying on the clear and unequivocal announcement by the republican movement. This conversation took place on ABC television on 17 November 2010 on the announcement of the Royal Wedding, Professor Warhurst speaking for the ARM.

He referred to a bill for a plebiscite to be reintroduced by Greens leader, Dr. Bob Brown and added:

ARM: “We look forward to linking the coming wedding of Kate and William with the argument for a republic.”

ABC: “Would that be an uncomfortable coincidence as far as you are concerned”

ARM:” No, we say: Bring it on. We look forward to it. “

ABC: “ You can’t go against a Royal Wedding”

ARM: ” No, my word we can because the benefit of a Royal Wedding is, it brings attention to the debate about Australia's national identity and the fact that 20 or 30 years time William will become King of Australia unless Australia becomes a republic.

ARM:” It will be in fact an ideal time and attention is on a matrimonial event to have a political and constitutional debate in Australia. And that's how it should be.”

...split...

I assume there is a dispute in the ARM leadership as to what to do. There is as I have said another possibility – gross incompetence and an organisation in disarray.

That is that Mr. Donovan did not know what Professor Warhurst had said, no records were kept and when Mr. Donovan read my comment, he did not bother to check.

Surely no serious organisation would allow itself to fall into this situation.

And this is the organisation which is calling on Australians to remove one of the pillars of our Westminster system, to make the biggest changes ever known to our constitutional system and which has previoulsy approved  the shredding of our Australian Flag.

...video...

In case Mr Donovan still doesn’t know what his  leader announced to a somewhat incredulous nation, here is the video:

..earlier claims of lying...

Kim Bonython: A Tribute Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Thursday, 24 March 2011
South Australian entrepreneur and arts investor Kim Bonython died on 19 March 2011 after a long illness. He was aged 90.

A patron of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, he was elected as an ACM South Australian delegate to the 1998 Constitutional Convention.

He played a leading role in the 1999 campaign for a No vote in the republican referendum, with great success: the state ( and the nation ) overwhelmingly rejected the proposal.

The ABC reported that he died peacefully in his North Adelaide home on Saturday surrounded by family.

This segment was broadcast by the ABC from Adelaide.
