''...(A)fter Ms Bryce spoke out about the republic, Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy created a petition seeking that only people prepared to accept becoming a knight or dame should be made Australia's governor-general and recommended Peter Cosgrove as an 'ideal candidate'" writes The Australian's Political Editor Dennis Shanahan.

He says that General Peter Cosgrove is set is set to become the next Governor-General of Australia, with the formal announcement of the appointment of the popular former chief of the defence force expected late next month.

The Queen's Christmas Broadcast, 25 December 2013 Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Thursday, 26 December 2013

In Her Christmas Broadcast on  25 December 2013, Her Majesty speaks of striking a balance between action and reflection, and looks back at the birth and Christening of Prince George and the 60th anniversary of her Coronation in 2013.

The tradition goes back to the early days of radio, pioneered by The Queen's grandfather King George V. This is an occasion when Her Majesty speaks without the advice of the ministers of any of Her Realms.

On Saturday 7th December, stalwart members of the South Coast ACM Group met for an informal Christmas lunch at the Gerroa Fisherman’s Club. Most of those present have been members since the early 1990’s.

The groups regular members try to meet twice a year.

It was a lovely sunny day and the twenty two members and friends present enjoyed the magnificent outlook over the beach.

Mrs Lorna Angel a beautiful Christening Cake for Baby Prince George.

Mrs Diana Melleuish kindly donated some lovely gifts for a raffle and Mrs Barbara Oehm took photos on her ipad, so we could share the record of this lovely day with you.

Leading republican misunderstands petition Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Sunday, 22 December 2013

Republicans frequently misunderstand the processes, conventions and provisions of our constitutional system, the one they want to understand.

One recent example relates to the process for the appointment of the Governor-General since its inception in 1930.

This provides that the Prime Minister tender his advice to The Queen ''after  informal consultation''  with Her Majesty.

It is intended to be a two stage process.

Prominent republican and flag changer Peter FitzSimons misunderstood this in his column in the Sun Herald on 15 December ( published below).

So we sent this letter to the editor and responded to Mr. FitzSimons on twitter.

He replied: ''As I said in my column Professor. An elderly Englishwoman in London knows better than us. LUDICROUS! Merry Chrissie."

Republic and tax Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Saturday, 21 December 2013

Be warned, fellow Australians.

Here is a campaigning New Zealand republican who  also wants New Zealanders to pay more taxes.  Is that to pay for his politicians' republic?

Image
[ Haka for The Queen of New Zealand]

He is former politician, Steve Maharey, now vice-chancellor of Massey University. He is a sociologist.

Writing in  The New Zealand Herald on 22 November, 2013 he presents ''a list of a dozen areas we might focus on.... a core agenda for change."

Two of the twelve are: "Become a republic - we need to know what it means to belong to 21st century New Zealand,'' and '' Collect more tax: we do not pay enough tax to build the kind of society we want to live in.''

Readers will not be surprised that the word "we" appears almost 40 times in this opinion piece.
