Fighting the Swan Turnbull republic Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Saturday, 08 June 2013

ACM is leading the fight against the Swan-Turnbull republican campaign. We have to be vigilant.

Just after Liberal shadow minister Malcolm Turnbull re-launched the republican movement campaign, he entered into an unholy alliance with Labor Treasurer Wayne Swan and Malcolm Turnbull to turn Australia into some as yet undefined politicians' republic.

...ACM defends system...

But as Professor David Flint says in this interview broadcast on the national SBS News on 3 June, 2013, support for this is so low not only would a referendum be doomed, so would a plebiscite. ( See ACM's report on opinion polling - in particular the graph showing polling trends since the referendum and across the polls - at http://bit.ly/eA6Gyn )

And as Opposition Leader Tony Abbott - ACM's foundation executive director - suggests, Australians are just not interested. The only vote which concerns them is the one in the coming election.

...distractions....

For Wayne Swan this is distraction from the problems relating to the budget, surplus which disappeared, the massive debts which are accumulating and the polling which is indicating problems for the government in the coming election.

...brand differentiation..

For Malcolm Turnbull, who has leadership aspirations, this is a singular way to demonstrate that his brand is different from that if his leader. He must not be underestimated both as a campaigner, and for the fact that his campaign director revealed he was the principal benefactor of the republican movement in the nineties.

One unresolved issue is whether he gave a commitment not to push the republican issue when he campaigned for the seat of Wentworth.

Although Queen Elizabeth II was born in April 1926, New South Wales will celebrate her 87th birthday next Monday with a public holiday.

2013 also marks 60 years since Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in Westminster Abbey. St John’s Church will hold a special Evensong service this Sunday (9th of June) at 4pm to mark the occasion.

The Cathedral Singers, directed by Jim Abraham, will perform along with organists, Dr Brett McKern and Nicola Chau.
The repertoire will include music sung at the 1953 Coronation:

  • Handel Zadok the Priest
  • God Save the Queen
  • All people that on earth do dwell

A special 60th Anniversary prayer written by Westminster Abbey with the Queen’s authority will be used.

All are welcome. Entry to the service and following Afternoon Tea is free.

St John’s is one of Sydney’s oldest churches and is currently undergoing major improvement works to restore it to its original glory. Amongst the Church’s treasures is a stone from Westminster Abbey.

Coronation Sixty Years Ago Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Sunday, 02 June 2013

Sixty years ago, Elizabeth II was crowned and anointed Queen according to this ancient service, the only one surviving in our modern world. This ushered in the new Elizabethan age which has seen significant changes throughout the Commonwealth. Australians and New Zealanders as well as those in what were then the Pacific Island colonies and territories had to wait almost a week to see film of the event which fascinated the world. Until then they made do with short wave radio broadcasts and newspaper reports, accompanied by grainy radio transmitted pictures.

This clip contains rare archive TV and film footage of the Coronation, both black and white and in colour.
