The leader of the Federal Opposition, Mr. Latham, announced on July 14 2004 that, if elected Prime Minister, he would fly the flag of the Eureka Stockade at Parliament House as part of the 150th Anniversary Celebrations to be held on December 3rd, 2004 (Ballarat Courier 15 July 2004). Since this time Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM) has received distressed messages from concerned Australians who fear that it is Mr. Latham’s clear intention to challenge Australia’s National Flag. ACM condemns Mr. Latham’s pledge to fly the Eureka flag at Parliament House.

Barnaby Joyce - strong supporter of our constitution Print E-mail

It was good to see that the Queensland Nationals Senate candidates have come out to declare their very strong belief that Australia’s move to a Republic is not inevitable, would not produce better Government, would not fix any single problem currently faced by Australia and would only serve as a distraction from the real tasks of elected representatives.

They were responding to comments made by the Federal Treasurer and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Peter Costello.

Don't Elect The President! Lesson From The Butler Affair Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Sunday, 15 August 2004

Andrew Bolt is one of the nation's most read columnists. A shrewd observer of the affairs of the nation, he is one of the few to see the dangers in the republican model which the official republicans are now secretly backing, publicly pretending they have no model.

He charges the ARM with irresponsibility for going down this path. On the republican side, Professor Greg Craven has been warning about this since the Griffith University republican conference.

In his column in the Herald Sun (13.8.04), Andrew Bolt draws a very important lesson from the Butler affair, the ending of which has given us no joy at all.

The lesson, he says, is NEVER to elect president.

Last Friday, Channel 7 asked me to comment on a poll taken by Hawker Britton. There were three questions.

The first was:

Do you think it’s time for Queen Elizabeth to step down or abdicate in favour of Prince Charles?

The results were No 51%, Yes32%, Unsure 17%.

In the country, the Yes vote was 35%. Of those aged under 30, it was 37%, and of those aged over 65, the Yes vote was 25%.

Resignation of Tasmania's Governor Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Monday, 09 August 2004
The only joy in the resolution of Tasmania's problems concerning the office of Governor was in the way it was done. There was no blood in the streets, nor was there a long drawn out impeachment process which, as we have seen elsewhere, can paralyze the government to the detriment of the state and the nation.

Our constitutional system ensures that such processes are fast, smooth, efficient and inexpensive. When Mr Butler was appointed, and appeared on ABC television, ACM objected not to his appointment but to his putting words into The Queen's mouth, claiming that Her Majesty was surprised by the referendum and had wondered why we did not become a republic. We also said he must swear the Oath of Allegiance, and when he did ( he actually affirmed) we indicated our delight that, being the honorable man we assumed he was, he now supported the existing constitutional structure and would be loyal to it and to his Sovereign.. We regretted the fact that he did not accept the traditional role of the Governor as Deputy Prior in the Order of St John, which has tremendous grass roots support and does such wonderful voluntary work at sporting events and in emergencies.
