Celebrate the birth of HRH Prince George in Melbourne, 22 November Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Thursday, 24 October 2013

Last year we celebrated Her Majesty’s wonderful achievement of reigning over us so graciously for sixty years. This in itself brought recollections of the celebrations which occurred in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee to worldwide acclaim.

This year we are proud to celebrate the birth of Prince George of Cambridge. As in Queen Victoria’s time we now have three generations in direct line of succession to the throne. This is only the second time in a thousand years this has occurred.

Image

Accordingly, we are delighted to invite you to join us for a special celebratory function on Friday, 22nd November 2013, held together with the Monarchist League in Australia (Vic. Chapter), which will mark this momentous event.

We do hope you will be able to join us and look forward to welcoming you and your guests.  Further, an exciting development concerning the Victorian Division of ACM will be announced on the night.

Future King of Australia is christened Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Thursday, 24 October 2013

He was, in every sense, the perfect baby. Prince George, who will one day be king and head of the Church of England, was calmness personified throughout his half-hour christening ceremony today.

Image

It may have been “the first time he’s been quiet all day”, as his father, the Duke of Cambridge, joked before the ceremony, but the three-month-old Prince showed he has the temperament for the big occasion as he took the whole thing in his stride.

Insiders said he barely raised a whimper of protest when the Archbishop of Canterbury trickled water from the River Jordan on his head, unlike his father, who cried during and after his own christening, prompting the Queen Mother to say: “He has a good set of lungs.”

When Prince George arrived for the ceremony, wearing a replica of the 172-year-old royal christening robe, there was even the smallest hint of a wave for his great-grandmother, the Queen.

The only thing missing was a smile, though at three months old, it would have been unfair to expect that even from a royal baby.

Prince Charles is to make a "substantial donation to Red Cross bushfire appeal Print E-mail
Written by ACM
Thursday, 24 October 2013

His Royal Highness had personally met NSW Rural Fire Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons during his visit to Australia in 2010 and said today he was moved to send a personal note to Fitzsimmons and make a contribution on behalf of the royal family.

Image

"Having had the great pleasure of meeting some of the volunteer firefighters of NSW at Bondi Beach last year, I just wanted you all to know that you are very much in my thoughts as you battle courageously against such appalling bushfires around Sydney," he said today.

"My wife and I so greatly admire the selfless service you provide in such incredibly dangerous and distressing circumstances and our hearts go out to all those - including firefighters - who have lost their homes in this terrible conflagration."

He said his wife Camilla joined him in sending "special wishes and heartfelt encouragement" at such a difficult time.

Neville Bonner Memorial Prize 2013 Print E-mail
Written by Luke Hantzis
Monday, 21 October 2013

The Neville Bonner Memorial Prize is a public-speaking competition for students in years 9 and 10, set up by Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM). It honours our first indigenous Senator, Neville Bonner AO, who firmly believed more Australians should have an understanding of their Constitution.

Image

The competition aims to develop students’ understanding of the Constitution through a 10 minute prepared speech, drawing on the knowledge they have attained through ACM’s educational website, www.crownedrepublic.com.au, as well as other sources.  This is followed by a 3 minute impromptu speech.

This year's topic for the prepared speech was "What, in your view, is the most important function of the Australian Crown".  The impromptu topic was "What impact, if any, do you think the Royal Baby had on the monarchy/republic debate".

This year, ACM held the competition in August and September. Competitors from Sydney and Hobart delivered their speeches in front of an eminent panel of judges in New South Wales and Tasmania Parliament House respectively.

Himaushu Hardikar of Year 10 at The Hutchins School placed first in the Tasmanian Division of the competition and Amy Ngov of Year 10 at Cabramatta High School placed first in New South Wales. Ms. Elise Archer MP and The Hon. Rev Fred Nile MLC attended the respective State Finals.

Winners were presented with a cheque for $250 and their schools were awarded the prestigious Neville Bonner Memorial Shield.

Each participant’s ranking was based on the average score of their performance in the prepared and impromptu speeches.

Congratulations to each of this year’s contestants.

Queen opens Opera House Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Monday, 21 October 2013

Forty years ago The Queen opened the Opera House, the incomparable design of  Jørn Oberg Utzon, AC.

The Opera House was  the dream of a humble man of remarkable vision, the great Joe Cahill, Labor Premier and  a dedicated supporter of the constitutional monarchy.

Without Joe Cahill there would be no Opera House; without Jørn Oberg Utzon, AC, it would not be so spectacularly beautiful.

Image

The inscription on a plaque records Joe Cahill's thoughts "If we in our lifetime did nothing more than express our love of the arts by providing a building worthy of them, even when names are forgotten, the building will always remain as a testimony to what was done in the year 1954 by a group of citizens for the encouragement of talent and culture."
