Queen's Birthday special on ABCTV: BBC series begins 7.30 PM next Sunday Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Saturday, 03 June 2006
This Sunday, 11 June 2006 at 730PM, the ABC will begin transmitting the BBC two part series, “The Queen at 80”. This is sure to attract far more attention and interest than the predictable republican stunt timed for the official Queen’s Birthday in all states and territories, except for Western Australia, which will celebrate the birthday on 2 October 2006. (I shall return to that republican stunt in my next column-but I assure you it will be of no more interest than that embarrassing fiasco, the “mate for a head of state” campaign.) The ABC’s transmission on 23 April 2006 about Rolf Harris and his painting of The Queen attracted a record nationwide TV audience of 1.28 million. This was the largest audience for this slot this year, and larger than any ABC audience for any programme in that week.

Last year, on 12 April 2005, we reported that, against the predictions of the commentariat and the attempts of the republicans to denigrate them, an enormous nationwide TV audience had watched the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla. This was early on Sunday morning when most Australians are usually in bed or they are not at home. This programme, about a Sovereign who has reigned for more than half the life of the nation, whom we never pay and who will never receive a golden handshake or generous superannuation, and who has always done her duty, is sure to attract a very large audience.

Report on the ACM Leichhardt/Balmain Branch Event with Alan Jones Print E-mail
Written by Professor David Flint AM
Wednesday, 14 September 2005

Alan Jones speaks at a FREE ACM function organized by the Leichhardt/Balmain ACM No Republic Branch held at the Balmain Leagues Club

George Stone OAM is Convenor of the Balmain Branch of ACM. He is a former officer in the NSW Police Force. As an officer, Mr Stone swore an Oath of Allegiance to his Queen, and as with a man of honour, he had no intention of breaking his oath.

As a long-term supporter term of Balmain Leagues Club, Mr Stone became a close friend of the coach, Mr Alan Jones, the 2GB radio presenter.

Mr. Stone was witness to Alan’s legendary generosity and hard work during this period and there is no doubt that Alan Jones greatly admired and respected George Stone’s work for the club.

ACM NATIONAL CONFERENCE – “THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND STATE GOVERNORS – GUARDIANS OF AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY”

Professor David Flint, National Convenor

ACM held its annual conference in Sydney on 26 to 28 August, 2005 at the Union Club. This was ACM’s sixth since the referendum.

In opening the formal part of the Conference on the Saturday, I pointed out that with the 2004 election result, republicanism involving a serious proposal to throw out our constitution was off the political agenda and the republican movement is well and truly in the doldrums.

Newcastle-Hunter Branch Report Print E-mail
Written by David Horkan
Saturday, 03 September 2005

It is two or three years since Kerry last visited Newcastle and we realised how much has happened when Kerry addressed the Branch on 19 June. It appears that ACM is enjoying a resurgence as the number of supporters continues to grow, new branches open, and some of the branches that went into recession following the referendum are becoming active again. Kerry once again inspired the Branch to continue the hard work in our area and reported that a growing number of younger supporters are signing up, suggesting that republicanism is less ‘trendy’ than it once was.
